The Opportunity

Reporting to the Co-Chairs, the Executive Director will provide inspired leadership and oversee day-to-day operations of National Alliance of Provincial Health Research Organizations (NAPHRO). This strategic and proactive leader will build on existing success and stimulate collaboration in an evolving health research and innovation environment to deliver value to NAPHRO members.

The Executive Director will work with the Executive to develop and execute strategic goals and objectives and foster a visible presence with leaders in the Canadian health research ecosystem to build strategic alliances and represent the interests of NAPHRO and its member organizations.    

The successful incumbent is a strategic professional who seeks to build relationships, identify, and seize opportunities and partnerships, coordinate activities, and execute tactical plans. We are seeking an adaptable, forward-thinking relationship builder with the ability to make a lasting impact and lead in innovative ways. 

The incumbent will be located in Ottawa and work closely with Co-Chairs who rotate regularly and the Executive who are located across Canada. The successful candidate must be internally motivated, self-directed and adaptable to work effectively in this environment.

NAPHRO brings together provincially mandated research and innovation agencies for dialogue, partnerships, and collaboration to facilitate research, foster the use of evidence-based practices, and improve the health and well-being of Canadians.

NAPHRO members invest nearly $500 million annually in health research and innovation, an investment that contributes to a range of local, regional, and national impacts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain effective relationships within charitable, academic, provincial, federal, and national organizations to ensure the interests of NAPHRO, and its member organizations are actively represented and promoted.

  • Represent NAPHRO at national tables and events as required.

  • Continuously gather intelligence on the research and innovation enterprise in Canada, including having an in-depth understanding of NAPHRO members and its partners, to support priority setting and agenda building.

  • Lead the development and execution of strategic objectives, in partnership with NAPHRO members

  • Identify and seize opportunities for NAPHRO, and its members organizations, to be seen as expert funders and thought leaders in the research ecosystem and to function as a convenor, sharing best practices as experts in supporting the research and innovation ecosystem.

  • Coordinate and facilitate NAPHRO, partnership and sub-committee meetings and ongoing communication to ensure activities progress between meetings and deliverables and deadlines are met.

  • Identify potential partners and opportunities to leverage funding and collaboration on areas of common interest.

  • Ensure effective day-to-day operations, financial management and risk mitigation through planning and execution.

Selection Criteria

  • Degree in health, business, public administration or equivalent; Master’s Degree is considered an assets.

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience, coupled with strong financial and business acumen.

  • Superior organizational and strategic planning skills.

  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, facilitation, consultation, problem-solving, critical thinking, and conflict management skills.

  • Innovative thinker who can apply resourceful and creative solutions in a changing environment.

  • Adaptable, internally motivated and organized individual with excellent administrative skills and the ability to work independently or as a team with a variety of professionals.

  • Established network and/or ability to foster new relationships. Ability to be diplomatic and establish trusted relationships with executives and senior officials from partner organizations and governments.

  • Advanced leadership capability coupled with a collaborative and proactive approach to impact organizational performance and maximize value.

  • Engaging and transformational leadership style with the ability to influence individuals internally and externally.

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in both official languages is preferred.

  • Background in health research and innovation funding is an asset.

  • Experience reporting to a Board of Directors and successful track record of good governance is an asset.

Work Environment

This position is located in Ottawa and works remotely with NAPHRO members from across Canada. The Executive Director reports directly to the Co-Chairs who are chosen by the Executive Committee and change on a regular rotation.

The Executive Director works independently and has access to some support for administrative, financial, and communications from within the NAPHRO organizations.
